Your Comments : 'We were denied media freedom'

Medias freedom does not mean that they are above the law. Looks like they simply disobey police instructions and they have to face the consequences.Media presence will only create more problems.

New cruise ship plans to sail between Duluth and Toronto

DULUTH, Minn. - The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is working to ensure clear sailing through new immigration rules for a planned cruise ship providing regular service between Duluth and Toronto.

Travel Dynamics International has announced that it has bought a 50-suite cruise ship that it plans to sail out of Duluth during the summer and fall of 2009.

Adolph Ojard is executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority. He says his agency will need to work with Homeland Security officials on the security logistics.

Ojard says he wants to avoid repeating the problems the cruise ship Columbus encountered in September.

After a Great Lakes tour that was supposed to end in Chicago, it learned there were no marine terminals on the Great Lakes certified to accept foreign travelers.

A dance crew from Boston chases a shot at stardom on MTV

They grew up in some of Boston's roughest neighborhoods and found salvation in hip-hop dance. Now members of the troupe Status Quo are trying to survive their toughest professional challenge yet: capturing first place in MTV's "Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew" competition, a reality show pitting nine of the country's best, most energetic young dance crews in a can-you-top-this showdown offering a top prize of $100,000 and a shot at showbiz stardom.

Episodes of "Dance Crew" are taped Tuesdays in Los Angeles for broadcast Thursdays at 10 p.m. on MTV. Status Quo has already made it through two rounds and will compete again tonight. They could be dancing on thin ice this time, though, as the field shrinks and the show's three judges - rapper Lil Mama, singer-producer JC Chasez, and hip-hop choreographer Shane Sparks - grow stingier with their praise and start channeling their inner Simon Cowell.

Bitter chocolate: Regulators probe price-fixing claims

NEWARK — If you feel your Valentine's Day chocolates are not such a sweet deal this year, you're not alone. Regulators are investigating price fixing among candy makers in at least three different countries.

In the last week, the German Federal Cartel Office raided the offices of seven of leading chocolate companies including Mars Inc., Kraft Foods Inc. and Nestle SA searching for documents. Three months ago, Canada's Competition Bureau searched the offices of several companies, many of the same ones as in Germany.

The Canadian investigation sparked several American lawsuits accusing the world's biggest chocolate companies of violating antitrust laws.

The U.S. Department of Justice declined to confirm it is investigating, yet several companies confirmed receiving inquiries.

McGinnis: Cause-of-the-day democracy

From the moment colonists set foot on Jamestown, American history has been about social change, and anybody who thinks they can stop it is kidding themselves.

In every element of life, from government institutions to nonprofit organizations, PTAs and church committees, we're seeing it. As anti-establishment as they may have been in the ‘60s, Baby Boomers are taking the reins from the Greatest Generation, determined that nobody waste their time or money.

Today good stewardship means operating by efficient, transparent business models. Technology has leveled the playing field and the days of patronage appointments, handshake deals and the buddy system are coming to a close. It's time to lead or leave.

We have gradually come to a turning point in local government. Wichita County voters have watched county operations slowly succumb to change; things are far from perfect but attrition should clear the remaining hurdles.
