Pauline Fitzgerald; the force behind famed JFK tea parties

When Henry Cabot Lodge lost his US Senate seat to John F. Kennedy in 1952, he reportedly blamed "those damn tea parties" for the defeat.

The organizer of those famous informal, meet-the-candidate gatherings, Polly Fitzgerald, drew inspiration from Lodge's remark. She later oversaw events for Kennedy's White House bid and for the campaigns of his brothers Edward and Robert, playing a key role in helping to build the vaunted political dynasty.

Pauline (McNamara) Fitzgerald, whom the Kennedys called "Cousin Polly," died of a stroke Feb. 1 at Fox Hill Village in Westwood, where she had lived for two years. She was 88 and previously lived in Needham and Osterville.

"Polly was a dear cousin and a wonderful friend to me and to my parents, my sisters, and my brothers, and will be deeply missed," Senator Edward M.

Mohawks: No arbitration

MONTICELLO " The St. Regis Mohawks this week notified their former partner Empire Resorts that they won't go to arbitration to determine if their agreement is over " their deal to develop a $600 million Indian casino is dead, they say.
"The Tribe does not view arbitration as necessary since the tribe acknowledges that the agreements have expired," Spokeswoman Leslie Logan said. "The tribe is in the process of issuing a letter to Empire Resorts formally acknowledging expiration of the purchase agreement on Dec. 31 and to formally terminate the partnership with Empire."

Anniversary poses tough travel questions

Denver. Kansas City. Chicago. Las Vegas. Minneapolis.
Thad and I have been together as a couple more than half of our natural lives 18 years - and we can count on one hand the out-of-state destinations to which weve traveled.
I wish we were world travelers, but we just arent. Some people find fulfillment in traveling to far-off places, but we love being at home.
Thats why Ive dragged my feet a bit when it comes to planning a 10 year anniversary trip a year late. We had originally planned to fly west to San Francisco or east to New York to celebrate a decade of wedded bliss, but parenthood took precedence.
Brenner was just 3-and-a-half-months-old when we celebrated our 10th anniversary last September.
At the time, we both agreed that a trip to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater and the Albertville Outlet Malls in Minnesota was about as far away as we wanted to be from our kids.
