Trump has made us look like a nation of parochial bumblers

This episode sends a message to every wideboy property developer that the Scots are so weak and befuddled, that you can run rings round them. That you can walk into the office of any top civil servant and browbeat them into getting what you want.

As I say, I intend no slur against the integrity of Jim McKinnon, an innocent bystander here. But the Scottish political classes as a whole have shown themselves to be out of their depth when dealing with difficult people like Trump. It was not unreasonable to expect him at least to negotiate over the Site of Special Scientific Interest that he intended to defile with his golf links. Maybe in the end, the development is worth the damage to the environment. Almost certainly a compromise could have been reached over the sand dunes in question.

Political Blog with Jim Shella

Democrats are making noises about a possible repeal of the October hike in the local income tax before they lose the majority on the City County Council in January.

Would that be viewed as vindictive politics, or the right thing to do in response to Tuesday's vote? How could Republicans vote against it? Would the Mayor sign it? How about the next Mayor? Will Republicans do their own repeal in January, if the Democrats don't?

If there's a repeal can Republicans cut enough spending to make up the gap, or will we see a return to overcrowded jails?

This is going to be interesting.

You may have noticed I missed a prediction. Most years I would settle for 5 out of 6, but I could have done better this time.

Every School Every Thursday -- West Des Moines & Clive

In support of the Character Counts pillar of citizenship, sixth-grade students participated in a mock caucus at school Jan. 3. The sixth-grade teachers presented some positive highlights about each candidate and then let the students discuss the candidates among themselves. Students practiced good debating and persuasion skills. The results were as follows: Barack Obama-58 percent, Mike Huckabee-22, Hillary Clinton-7, Mitt Romney-7, Bill Richardson-2, Rudy Giuliani-2, John McCain-1, and Ron Paul-1.

The Jordan Creek waffle breakfast and book fair is scheduled for Jan. 26 in the community room at Jordan Creek. Tickets for the waffle breakfast are $5 in advance or $6 at the door. Volunteers are needed to help. Please call Wendi Roush, 267-1719 or Susan Kopaska, 221-3371. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the media center at Jordan Creek.

Harangody emerging as Big East's best big man

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Time after time, Luke Harangody stomped toward the bench press, shoving logic and reason out of his path as he positioned himself below the bar.

With every attempt, the howls in Notre Dame's weight room grew louder. Fighting Irish players huddled around Harangody, playfully prodding their teammate, whose bullishness was wildly entertaining, never mind borderline insane.

Strength and conditioning coach Tony Rolinski, in an effort to simulate the NBA combine, was recording each player's bench-press repetitions at 185 pounds. Harangody aimed to beat his mark from the previous week, but on his first stab, he finished with the same total.

Capturing the Moment: NFL Films at Super Bowl XLII

On the morning of Super Bowl XLII, NFL Films has its own pregame meal. It is no different, really, than the pregame meal for the two teams. All the personnel gather in a hotel ballroom and after the dishes are cleared away, we go over the game plan one last time. Every assignment is checked, every detail is reviewed.
