Hail to King, and a world music show

DIFFERENT DRUMS: The OD TAPO IMI presents a family performance, "Drums & Tropical Pop," showcasing "vacation music" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Arcada Theatre in west suburban St. Charles. The band's name is an acronym that stands for "oil drums that are pounded out into musical instruments."

The kids -- and grownups, too -- will be fascinated by the music made on the 55-gallon petroleum oil drums accompanied by four-part vocal harmonies. And what is meant by vacation music? Songs by Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett and Sheryl Crow. Tickets are $15 to $35. The venue is at 105 E. Main. For tickets or more information, call (630) 587-8400; TheArcada.com.

GNU and FSF News for February 2008

For the latest updates see the FSF upcoming events page.

This monthly news summary about the Free Software Foundation and GNU project was distilled down from FSF press releases, blogs, email lists, and website news pages. The idea is to provide a concise summary of FSF/GNU news from the past month for those who don't have the time or interest to find and read all the original news sources within that community. This is a news summary about the FSF but it is not produced by or associated with the FSF in any way.

I'm looking for a volunteer to take over writing this news summary each month. It's a minimal amount of work, taking no more than a few hours per month.

Again thanks for a great summary!, posted 25 Feb 2008 at 18:29 UTC by atai » (Journeyer) I don't think anyone can do as a good job as you...

Time for a fix, sir? Then visit your local, Home Office-approved ...

Gareth, who was raised in a family of six in Battersea, south London, "went off the rails" after his father died when he was 10. He was finally released from borstal in 1984 when he was 18, but by then he had developed a taste for heroin. Within six days of his release, he was back in custody for theft. "I didn't know what else to do apart from steal and smoke heroin," he says.

Now, more than two decades later, Gareth is still using heroin in British institutions albeit in more controversial circumstances. Gareth is one of just 20 people who, instead of taking oral methadone, are being treated with government-funded pharmaceutical heroin (diamorphine) in a groundbreaking experiment to move entrenched heroin users away from dealers and crime. Now, at the age of 41, with more than two-thirds of his life spent on heroin, Gareth looks fitter than the average London cabbie.

In brief

Patients who undergo vision-correcting laser eye surgery sign a release form with an extensive list of risks, but some researchers and former patients say a potential complication is not mentioned: depression that can lead to suicide.

In response to patient complaints, the Food and Drug Administration plans to convene a large, national study to examine the relationship of LASIK complications and quality of life, including psychological problems such as depression.

ORU alumni support sought

Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.

"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.

Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."

ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.

A national ID card isn't too different than a driver's license. One is issued by a State Government and is already used for more than just stating your ability to drive. The other would be issued by the Federal Government and would eventually be used for everything except stating your ability to drive. .
